Lullwater Creek Park (Lullwater Preserve)
Lullwater Preserve is a hidden oasis within Emory University's North Decatur campus, offering a serene and scenic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This preserve is home to a variety of walking and running trails that wind through lush, wildlife-rich forests, around the tranquil Candler Lake, and past historic landmarks.
One of the standout features of Lullwater Preserve is its old-growth forest, where towering trees form a natural canopy that feels miles away from the urban environment just beyond. As you wander through the trails, you'll be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature—owls silently swooping through the trees, squirrels playfully darting around, and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. The trails meander through diverse landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities to capture the perfect shot in a variety of settings.
The Lullwater House mansion, a 1926 Tudor estate, adds a touch of historical charm to the preserve. Built with stone quarried on-site for Walter Candler, the son of Coca-Cola’s founder, the mansion overlooks the serene waters of Candler Lake. The lake itself is a peaceful retreat, home to waterfowl and fish that thrive in its sun-dappled shallows. On the northern end of the lake, a spillway leads to a picturesque waterfall and the ruins of a former powerhouse, creating a unique backdrop for photography.
Crossing the wood and steel span bridge downstream from the waterfall, you'll find the remnants of the powerhouse tower, an octagonal stone structure now draped in ivy. This secluded spot within the preserve feels like a secret garden, perfect for capturing intimate moments or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the surroundings.
Lullwater Preserve’s limited access ensures a sense of solitude, making it an ideal location for those seeking a private, natural setting for photography, a peaceful walk, or even just a moment of reflection by the water’s edge.
